Initial Setup

The app automatically sets up its database the first time it is run. Once this is complete, typically about 15-30 seconds, the launch screen disappears and the app is ready to use.

While sample data is included, you'll probably want to update to current prices for maximum utility. The home screen will show a prominent reminder to setup a Tiingo API token needed to update price and performance data.

Updating Prices and Performance Data

The app does not directly provide pricing data. Instead, it retrieves it from Tiingo on your behalf.

Only end-of-day prices are used so nothing will be updated intraday. Instead, wait until Tiingo makes them available at 5:30pm Eastern but verify with their official documentation from time to time.

Setting up a Tiingo API Token

  1. If you're not already a Tiingo user, sign up for a free account
  2. Login to your Tiingo API account on your iPhone or iPad, follow their directions for getting your API token, and copy it to your device's clipboard
  3. Open ETF Eye and go to the Update Prices screen by tapping the reminder message or the download button at the top of the home screen
  4. Paste your API token into the "Tiingo API Token" field
  5. Tap the "Test Connection and Save" button to check your credentials
    • A green check mark will appear if the test is successful. You're good to go!
    • A red x mark will appear if the test is unsuccessful. Paste your API token into the Notes app and ensure it is accurate.

Updating Prices

After a successful connection test, the "Update Prices" button will become available. Tap this button to update the prices directly from Tiingo. This process typically takes 30 to 60 seconds depending on the quality of the Internet connection.

Failed Updates

Price updates can fail from time to time. A "Show errors" button will appear when this happens to provide you with more context. Typical errors include:

If updates have partially succeeded, a "Catch Up Old Prices" button will appear. Tap this to download only the prices that failed to update.
